The interplay between genetics and society

We often assume that it is either our genes or the environment that determine who we become. Instead, we need to look at the complex interplay of genetics and social structures to understand human development. For example, our school performance is influenced by both genetic dispositions and environmental factors in our family and school. Our game displays how this interplay affects our education and health. As a society we have the freedom to restructure our social systems. How would you change our society? And how does that interplay with our genetics?

How it works

In the game, you receive points when you achieve health, status, and educational goals. The more points you collect, the 'more successful' your life is. But be careful not to lose the ball!

At the beginning, you're assigned a ball. Its size describes your genetic disposition. A larger ball may indicate, for example, that you are very motivated in school. Your socioeconomic position is also important. If your family is financially well-off, you start the game in an easier setting.

The game landscape has obstacles like holes, through which only small balls can fall. This represents problems like an unequal education system. So, not only do your decisions and chance influence the game, but also social injustices.

After the game, you can change selected areas of the game landscape so that balls of all sizes and types have similar chances

Who`s behind it?

The Max Planck Research Group Biosocial led by Dr. Laurel Raffington at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development uses innovations from human genomics to study how genetic influences and social inequality combine to lead to differences in education and health over the lifespan. The game was developed with Purple Sloth Studio.

Das Zusammenspiel von Genen und Gesellschaft

Oft existiert noch die Vorstellung, dass entweder unsere Gene oder unsere Umwelt darüber bestimmen, wer wir als Menschen sind. Doch die menschliche Entwicklung ist nur über das komplexe Zusammenspiel zwischen unserer genetischen Veranlagung und den gesellschaftlichen Strukturen zu verstehen. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist unsere schulische Leistung. Sie ist sowohl von genetischen Faktoren als auch von äußeren Einflüssen in der Familie und Schule geprägt. Unser Spiel zeigt, wie dieses Zusammenspiel beispielsweise unseren Bildungsweg und unsere Gesundheit beeinflusst.

Als Gesellschaft haben wir die Freiheit, die gesellschaftlichen Strukturen neu zu gestalten. Wie würdest du sie verändern? Und wie wirken sich diese Veränderungen im Zusammenspiel mit unseren Genen aus?

So geht`s

Im Spiel erhälst du Punkte, wenn du Gesundheits-, Status- und Bildungsziele triffst. Je mehr Punkte du sammelst, desto "erfolgreicher" ist dein Leben. Aber pass auf, den Ball nicht zu verlieren!

Am Anfang kriegst du einen Ball zugewiesen. Die Größe beschreibt deine genetische Ausgangsposition. Ein größerer Ball bedeutet zum Beispiel, dass du in der Schule sehr motiviert bist. Auch deine sozioökonomische Lage ist wichtig. Wenn deine Familie finanziell gut gestellt ist, startest du besser ins Spiel.

Die Spiellandschaft hat Hindernisse wie Löcher, durch die nur kleine Bälle fallen können. Das steht für Probleme wie ein undurchlässiges Bildungssystem. Also beeinflussen nicht nur deine Entscheidungen und Zufälle das Spiel, sondern auch soziale Ungerechtigkeiten.

Nach dem Spiel kannst du ausgewählte Bereiche der Spiellandschaft ändern, damit Bälle aller Größen und Arten ähnliche Chancen haben.

Wer steckt dahinter? 

Die Forschungsgruppe Biosozial am Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung unter Leitung von Dr. Laurel Raffington untersucht, wie genetische Einflüsse und soziale Ungleichheit zusammenwirken und zu Unterschieden in der Bildung und der Gesundheit im Verlauf eines Lebens führen. Dafür wendet sie Innovationen aus der Humangenomik an. Das Spiel wurde mit Purple Sloth Studio entwickelt.

Genlerin ve toplumun karşılıklı etkileşimi

İnsan olarak kim olduğumuzu genlerimizin veya çevremizin belirlendiği fikri hala yaygındır. Ancak, insan gelişimi sadece genetik yatkınlığımız ve toplumsal yapılarımız arasındaki karmaşık etkileşim yoluyla anlaşılabilir. Bunun bir örneği okuldaki performansımızdır. Hem genetik faktörler hem de ailedeki ve okuldaki dış etkiler tarafından karakterize edilir. Oyunumuz, bu etkileşimin örneğin eğitim yolumuzu ve sağlığımızı nasıl etkilediğini göstermektedir.

Bu Oyunda sağlık, statü ve eğitim hedeflerine ulaştığınızda puan kazanırsınız. Ne kadar çok puan toplarsanız, hayatınız o kadar "başarılı" olur. Ancak topu kaybetmemeye dikkat edin!

Başlangıçta size bir top atanır. Boyut, genetik başlangıç pozisyonunuzu tanımlar. Daha büyük bir top, örneğin okulda çok motive olduğunuz anlamına gelir. Sosyo-ekonomik durumunuz da önemlidir. Eğer ailenizin maddi durumu iyiyse, oyuna daha iyi bir başlangıç yaparsınız.

Oyun alanında sadece küçük topların düşebileceği delikler gibi engeller vardır. Bu, geçirgen olmayan bir eğitim sistemi gibi sorunları temsil eder. Yani oyunu etkileyen sadece sizin kararlarınız ve tesadüfler değil, aynı zamanda sosyal adaletsizliklerdir.
