'What's your gender?' Full Release

A little over a month ago we released “What’s your gender”, an experimental game jam entry that explored a range of terms and concepts concerning gender and identity. The game was met with more interest than we had originally anticipated and since we didn’t manage to include all of the aspects we had originally aimed for and were only able to provide german language support in the short 36 hours of the jam we set out to add further content and quality of life features such as volume controls and gamepad support, fix all manner of bugs and of course added full english language support for all texts and voicelines. Now, after a month of work we are finally ready to present the full release for “What’s your gender”.

A note from the devs

The original release of the game was created in under 36 hours as part of the “binary and beyond” themed BPB game-jam.

We’d like to point out that while “What’s your gender?” was created by a team of mostly queer devs, we do not have first-hand experience of all identities, terms and concepts featured, and even where we do, the experiences and the definitions we use may differ from those of others, who use similar labels. Most importantly, the list of identities and concepts featured in this game is far from exhaustive.

With this in mind, we hope that this game can be a source of information and insight for those unfamiliar with the shown concepts, and a source of comfort and recognition for those, who feel seen. What it does not aim to do, is to tell anyone, how they should define the labels that they apply to themselves.

If you want to learn more about any of these terms and concepts, check out the sources we have listed under “learn more” in the main menu screen.

Frequently asked Questions

  • Can I use “What’s your gender” for …
We’ve been asked a few times weather it is okay to use the game in educational programms, workshops etc. and the answer is: yes, plase do! Also: If you do, we’d love to know about it ❤️

  • Can you also add support for x other language.
We do not currently plan to add any other languages, since this costs quite a bit of time and requires us to be able to speak that language to a certain degree of confidence. If you are super passionate about having the game translated to a given language and willing to provide texts and voicelines feel free to email us, but no promises 😉

  • The game is free?
Yes. Being a small game, originally a jam entry and an educational game it is absolutely free and for everyone to enjoy. If you feel generous please consider donating to a local lgbtq+ support networks near you =)
